MLA Seeks to Strengthen Tree Protection in Northern Ireland

Feb 11, 2025

Peter McReynolds MLA is preparing to introduce a Private Member’s Bill aimed at enhancing the legal protection of trees across Northern Ireland.

This proposed legislation seeks to improve safeguards for individual trees, groups of trees, and ancient and long-established woodlands. The Bill focuses on three key areas:

  • Strengthening existing legal protections by enhancing Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs).
  • Introducing a new ‘Heritage Tree’ designation to protect Northern Ireland’s oldest and most significant trees.
  • Ensuring ancient and long-established woodlands, as well as legally protected trees, are safeguarded from development and infrastructure projects.

RSUA is currently forming a response to this consultation. Those wishing to share their views can contact Curtis Large, Policy and Public Affairs Officer, at curtis@rsua.org.uk.
